Asylum in the United States - Avoiding Persecution
Asylum may be granted to people who are already in the
United States and are unable or unwilling to return their home country
because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of
race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or
political opinion. An alien who is granted asylum is allowed to live and
work in the United States. Alien's granted asylum are also allowed to apply
for permanent resident status one year after they are granted asylum.
Additionally, foreign nationals not currently in the United States who are
amidst persecution in their county or will likely become persecuted may
apply for refugee assistance.
The
INS
has detailed regulations regarding asylum and refugee status. Those seeking
this relief should consult with O'Brien & Associates about the merits and
complexities of such an application.
