IT NewsA Wrinkle in Time review Even with Oprah its no fun

But then its time for the bad specialeffects again, and the three stars, and another round of wigs and couture costumes. And the trip goes off course.

Thats when the movie picks up. Theres a good scene in an outerspace suburb, where conformity is king, and another one on a nightmarish beach. Without the push to constantly create tons of CGI ntasy, DuVernay seems to relax and just let her characters breathe.

A Wrinkle in Time review Even with Oprah, its no fun

When she makes her entrance, shes feet tall, The Amazing Colossal Oprah. And even though she eventually shrinks in stature, shes still too big for this movie parading slowly through her scenes like an empress, royally dispensing selfempowering mottoes and solemn words of wisdom.

Sure, the message of love and mily and selfesteem is good. The whole thing is bright and Disneyfied and filled with pop songs. Its got a huge marketing push behind it. Your kids are going to want to see it.

Its when DuVernay tries to get all that magic on the screen that things go wrong.

And although the script cuts some characters, it sticks to the original story, with Meg, her kid brother and a neighborhood boy searching the cosmos for Megs missing ther helped out by three immortal beings named Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which and Mrs. Whatsit.

Do them, and yourself, a vor. Buy them the book instead.

With Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling. Oprah gets cosmic, and the charm of a childrens story gets lost. Director Ava DuVernay. . PG Scary s, mild violence. Area theaters.

Director Ava DuVernays version of the beloved childrens classic has a big cast and the best of intentions. Its socially progressive, racially erse and packed with positive messages.

Luckily, eventually the three beings step back and let the children played by the excellent Meg Reid and Deric McCabe, and the pleasant Levi Miller get on with their adventures.

Giving Meg a black mother or casting other parts with Hispanic or Filipino or Indian actors shouldnt be a big deal. It just makes the movie look more like America.

Mrs. Whatsit, played by Reese Witherspoon, at least gets to be a little sarcastic; Mrs. Who, played by Mindy Kaling, mostly sweetly smiles and quotes mous people. But Mrs. Which, played by Oprah Winfrey, is a disaster.

Its like a very special Oprah rerun but with towering blonde wigs, Reynolds Wrap lipstick and eyebrows made of Swarovski crystals.

Your webcam may know your ce, but your keyboard knows your mputer models can predict with . accuracy whether a man or woman is typing, according to a new study. To conduct the research, computer engineers installed keystrokelogging software onto the personal computers of volunteers men, womenwhich monitored their daily computer use for months. The researchers then used a program they created, called ISqueezeU to calculate the relative helpfulness of different typing features for determining genderthings like the time between two specific keystrokes, or the amount of time a key is pressed down during a single keystroke. A few features stood out as being more useful than others. For example, the average time between pressing the N key to pressing the O key was the most helpful, followed by the average time between pressing the M and O keys. The program isnt capable of specifying whether a man or woman s those keys ster or more oftenonly that there is a difference. The researchers then tested the programs findings using five machine learning models, which are computer programs that build models based on what they learn from existing data. All five models were able to predict gender accurately more than of the time, with the most successful model being more than accurate, the engineers report this week in. The team proposes the use of keystroke dynamics as a costefficient and nonintrusive way to identify the gender of unknown computer users in criminal investigations, such as in cases of cyberstalking or identity theft. The researchers plan to expand their data collection with more volunteers, and see whether incorporating other variables such as handedness or education level can increase accuracy.

Its time to salute the basketballIT News players who choose loyalty over opportunity

Its time to salute the basketballIT News players who choose loyalty over opportunityThis is about loyalty, Arnold said. My mom taught me about loyalty. My coach taught me about loyalty.

They refused to abandon ship even when their coach yelled at them or when someone offered free shoes, promised more exposure or guaranteed a championship team.

Perhaps no team deserves the neighborhood team label more than Hacienda Heights Los Altos. Six milies have had their kids playing together since the third grade. Coach Jeff Lucas and his son, Jarod, the standout junior guard, are among them. He gets to coach a group who met when they were eating cupcakes and Twinkies after games.

For me, its having a commitment to these kids, Davis said. A lot have singleparent households. They look at me almost like a big brother. I look out for them. Theyre committed to me and Im committed to them.

Wayne Arnold of Dominguez, a fouryear player at the same high school, is saluted by teammates. Nick Koza

Theres Brandon Williams of Encino Crespi. He was a state champion as a freshman starter. You lost the bet if you thought he wouldnt stay for four years. He has a scholarship to Arizona and has come back with a vengeance from knee surgery to be one of the top guards in California in his senior season. Under coach Russell White, he has become the complete studentathlete he wanted to become on and off the court.

Theres Sam Clareman of Brentwood. He was a junior varsity player as a freshman. In his junior year this season, he has won two games with lastsecond shots and a third game by three free throws with no time left. He never wavered, coach Ryan Bailey said.

You are now following this newsletter.See all newsletters.

Theres Kendal Frey of Harbor City Narbonne. He played junior varsity as a freshman, then was a key backup on the Gauchos City Section runnerup team as a sophomore. He has grown to , is averaging points and has mastered the little things needed to succeed pump ke, jump stop, taking a charge.

Wes and Riley have been a dream to coach, Oak Parks Aaron Shaw said. They take care of their schoolwork. Theyre dependable. They havent missed a game. Theyre always pushing themselves to be better. Theyre always great teammates.

Wes Slajchert, left, and Riley Battin, who have been playing together since third grade, are shown in a photo from sixth grade. Catherine Battin

He has led Dominguez to consecutive San Gabriel Valley League championships. Hes averaging points a game and headed to Cal State Fullerton. From the first game, when he scored points and said, I felt like Kobe, to the last regularseason game, when he scored points and was cheered by his home ns, Arnold has served as an example of how a player can blossom.

Then theres Riley Battin and Wes Slajchert, fouryear starters for Oak Park. Headed to Utah and Dartmouth, respectively, they kept their mouths shut, worked hard, ignored what was happening at other schools and flourished in their neighborhood environment. Theyve known each other since third grade.

Yes, weve reached the point in high school basketball where there are so many transfers on top teams that when you find a collegebound, fouryear player, he probably deserves a parade in appreciation for his loyalty.

There are lots of others trying to end high school with a championship. Theres no guarantee it will happen but at least theyre going down with the people theyve known and trusted and will be their friends for years to come.

I know Brandons parents and my parents, Regans said. Were big believers in loyalty.

A digest of essential news, insight and analysis from L.A. Times editors.

Hes had the opportunity to go to other schools but stayed loyal, Coach Anthony Hilliard said.

Its time to salute the basketball players who choose loyalty over opportunity

Its something extra special, Lucas said. All our milies are close.

Ditto for teammate Taj Regans, another fouryear player He scored points in the regularseason finale Friday when Williams went down with an ankle injury. Regans has sacrificed his scoring potential for the good of the team.

The day the Southern Section basketball playoff pairings are released is the perfect time to salute players who have stayed at the same high school for their entire career rather than played the transfer game.

First up is the yearold who should be wearing a Straight Outta Compton Tshirt foot guard Wayne Arnold of Dominguez. For four years, hes given his all to coach Jonathan Davis. And in return, Davis has reciprocated.
