It is with this thought in mind that we embark on launching Marco Polo Rally, a dramatic race from Paris to Peking by Ultralight. The race aims to pay homage to all those who dare: the explorers of our world, our land, our skies and of ideas. Those who dare to dream and challenge boundaries, who dare to be different.

CELEBRATING THOSE WHO DARE

PEERLESS SPECTACULAR EVENT

During a six week period, our Ultralight Rally will launch with 150-200 flying machines in the race. The Marco Polo Rally will be representative of man’s exciting achievements at the dawn of the new Millennium including

bulletthe ability to race in-flight
bulletwith participants from around the globe
bulletduring a Rally organized by a multi-national contingent
bulletthrough the communication power of the Internet
bulletraising funds to promote global peace through feeding the world’s hungry.

This unique event will attract the hearts of the romantic explorer, whether a flyer or a spectator , as the race launches from Paris, continues down the east coast of Italy, over to the Greek Islands, Jordan, then through Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, India, Laos and Vietnam, Hong Kong and finally Beijing.

The event will be staged in grand style with a launch gala in Paris and three event hosted, country-theme receptions along the route, ending with the race conclusion celebration in Beijing. All five hospitality locations will include both an airport spectator event as well as an evening social event.

All race touchdown points will be officially clocked and broadcast over the Internet as they occur. The event will also be reported via televised and print news updates with a possible full event television broadcast coverage as well.

All risk will be minimized in that flight routing and clearances are to be handled by the leading professional flight clearance company, Overflight. All participants will be insured, be required to provide medically fit certification, their craft will have passed event inspection and they will have to provide proof of flight experience.

The race will be scheduled on a six day flight and one day rest period over a six week interval. The one day rest period will allow the race schedule flexibility in the event of weather or other flight delays.

A substantial prize will be awarded to the overall race winner. In addition, daily and weekly prizes will be awarded to winning participants similar to the Tour de France event.

Funds to help address world hunger will be raised as part of the event based on a cumulative per mile flown metric for all participants.

ABOUT ULTRALIGHTS

Ultralights, often abbreviated in other languages as ULM for UltraLight Motorized, define a category of light flying machines, allowing 1 or 2 people to fly securely, with open or closed cockpit. (In US airspace, they are restricted to a single seat.) They may be used for sightseeing or traveling, as well as for agricultural work and security. For example, in the US police use them for traffic control, in France they are used by the army, in many countries they make airshots for TV and press possible and are useful to find new archeological sites.

Definitions and legal aspects vary from country to country, but ultralights (common US terminology) are usually subdivided as follows:

bulletmulti-axial planes, looking much like usual general aviation planes, and for some, having equivalent performances
bullettrikes, using a delta wing under which a motorized gondola hangs
bulletparamotors, basically a paraglider with an auxiliary motor
bulletgyrocopters, which are sustained by an unpowered rotor

Depending on country and regulations, two other groups may be included:
bulletultralight gliders, often towed by trikes
bulletultralight helicopters

The European definition further defines Microlight (common European terminology) as an aero plane having no more than two seats, Vso not exceeding 35 knots (65 km/h) CAS, and a maximum take-off mass of no more than:

bullet300 g for a landplane, single-seater; or
bullet450 kg for a landplane, two-seater; or
bullet330 kg for an amphibian or floatplane, single -seater; or
bullet495 kg for an amphibian or floatplane, two-seater, provided that a
bulletmicrolight capable of operating as both a floatplane and a
bulletlandplane falls below both MTOM limits, as appropriate.

Note: Foot-launched aircraft are excluded from this definition.

Ultralights offer a secure, comfortable and affordable way to come to the third dimension, to enjoy our world from another point of view. They have a tremendous advantage over regular aircraft due to their low weight and speed. Minor accidents cause little damage and major accidents are less often fatal. As With hang gliders, when they were first being invented, there were many poorly designed ultralights being flown by untrained pilots. Ultralights are now well understood and we know how they should be built and flown.

Advantages over conventional aircraft:

bulletowing to their simplicity, learning to fly is easier and faster to master
bulletthey offer excellent short take-off and landing on all kind of grounds, require no important infrastructure, can fly with skis and floats
bulletreduced regulations makes it easier for newcomers
bulletreduced renting, buying and maintenance costs
bulleta true robustness and excellent security, owing to their concept and to the modern components
bulleta low fuel consumption, and a very low noise level, which please ecologists.

Restrictions:
bulletyou may not fly at night or in a cloud
bulletonly one other person may travel with the pilot.

Ultralights are designed to have the same structural strength as regular normal category aircraft. A major reason people fly them is the lower cost, however, the most important reason people fly ultralights is because they are FUN ! The slow flight, often open cockpit, and light responsive handling make them more like a motorcycle of the air than a car in the sky.

Post Event Activities

The impact of the event will continue to serve your marketing program even after the actual race is completed through the availability of the Commemorative Event Book which will give indefinite shelf life to your sponsorship association. In addition, sponsors will be able to leverage the event story in subsequent product and service demonstrations which can be further enhanced through access to our event participant speakers.
